Abstract: Using Ca-45 macroradioautographic investigations were undertaken to trace the translocation of calcium from the leave to the fruit and from the skin of young apples on the tree and mature harvested apples in the interior of the fruit. A basal transport of calcium from the leave to the fruit could not be established. The results of experiments on apple leaves indicate that calcium is transported by an acropetal exchange movement. Calcium applied to the surface of young apples was translocated through the skin and calyx into the flesh and core. There was also an accumulatipn of calcium in the bundles, carpels and seed coats. By dipping mature harvested apples of several varieties in a 1% calciumchlorid solution no appreciable calcium translocation in the interior of the fruit was established. Therefore an enrichment of the calcium content in the flesh of harvested apples should not be obtained by dipping them short-dated before storage.
